Redesign of a University Distance Education Function
This university had three separate distance education functions that did their jobs well. But when the university decided to introduce online graduate degree programs, senior administration recognized the need for change. They hired a new executive director, who asked Tom Clay & Associates, Inc. to develop and recommend an organization design that would unite these disparate offices and support the new strategic thrust. To meet that need, we pored over documentation related to the current organization, conducted in-depth interviews/focus groups with stakeholders and staff, analyzed all available information, and then formulated and tested a design concept that incorporated the various units into a single, integrated organization. The project deliverable included observations on the original organization, its academic offerings and its culture; a business case; detailed descriptions of the new organization and how it would work; a high-level implementation plan; and an analysis of risks. Finally, we provided guidance as the new organization navigated the implementation process.
